Ngorongoro Crater

We thought twice about going to the Ngorongoro Crater because we were very nervous that it would be a zoo with loads of tourists etc.  Even though there were quite a few game vehicles around, we didnt regret our decision for a minute.  Its a facinating place with so many microclimates in such a small area so the plant life ranges from forests to marshland to savannah.

The regular wildlife was plentiful...and Alistair was ready to put to good use the huge lenses that he had been carrying around the world....
We couldnt believe our luck when 5 lionesses walked accross the veld and decided to use the shadow of the car in front of us for shade.
But things only got better because after a while they decided that our car provided more shade! We were so close to them that we could actually hear them breath....
We were literally eye to eye with them....

We stayed at a place called Plantation Lodge and they prepared the most amazing lunch boxes for us.
Complete with the wine we drank when we were in Chile (this photo is for Jen & John!)
A few snaps of the Plantation Lodge - run by Germans - very colonial but in a very nice way.  We couldnt fault the place.... and this made me even more anxious of the camping still to come...
